Holiday Home Runs, an Astros Shopping Event Houston Astros

Jose Altuve #27 of the Houston Astros watches the flight of his first-inning home run against the New York Yankees in game three of the American League Championship Series at Yankee Stadium on October 15, 2019 in New York City. Altuve's solo home run in Game 4 of the ALCS came in the bottom of the first, but it proved to be a valuable one. In the nearby town of Spring, current for sale signs lead to multiple home sellers asking more than $7 million. On Budde Road, about $9.5 million gets the buyer a six-bedroom, six and a half bath, 9,000-square-foot house set on a 10-acre space. The estate has a separate garage apartment, a guest house, a pool and an on-property pond.

Houston won Game 1 of the 2017 ALDS comfortably, posting three multi-run innings in an 8-2 win over Boston. Altuve made Astros history in the process, becoming the club's first player to hit three home runs in a postseason game. The second of these was a solo shot off Chris Sale in the bottom of the fifth that stretched Houston's lead to three runs. Altuve got the Astros started on a promising note in the 2020 ALCS, hitting a solo shot off Tampa Bay pitcher Blake Snell in the top of the first inning of Game 1. Unfortunately for Houston, the team failed to score again throughout the 2-1 loss, despite recording nine hits compared to just six for Tampa Bay.

Correa's new team, who agreed to pay him $350M, postpones introduction

Tensions were high as the 2017 ALCS went back to Houston, with the Yankees taking a 3-2 series lead following three straight wins in New York. Altuve helped give the Astros some breathing room in Game 6, hitting a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth, giving them a three-run lead. They piled on three more runs in the inning and walked away with a 7-1 win. This was another instance of a home run that didn't impact the outcome of the game, as Altuve hit a three-run blast in the top of the ninth for the final scoring play of a 10-1 win over the Chicago White Sox. Given the events following the previous game, though, Houston fans were happy to take all the runs they could get.

Now, 12 years into his career, Altuve is among the most prolific playoff performers in MLB history for an annual World Series contender. The heart of baseball beats downtown in Houston near the home of the Astros’ stadium, Minute Maid Park. Instead of hiding its local shrine to the game in a far-flung suburb, the city offers a sky-scraping backdrop for the home games of its American League champions. As a result, condos make up the selection of upper-end homes for sale near Houston’s diamond. Bregman hit his 16th home run of the season off Oakland pitcher Cole Irvin in the first inning.

Correa and his fiance, former Miss Texas USA, Daniella Rodriguez, met 16-year-old Jalen Garcia Friday at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, CBS Houston reports. Several options are available to make your holiday card stand out this holiday season. The offense lit a fire in the bottom half of the inning to award Montero with the win. Despite a first inning single from Cal Raleigh, the 1-0 Mariners lead felt very surmountable. Yet, by the second inning Rodríguez had taken the wind out of Houston's sails. To rally towards the home stretch, a fearsome trio of Astros hitters stepped up to the plate in the eighth.

He also had an RBI double in the seventh inning to help pad the lead. The office of Constable Ted Heap posted on social media a well-choreographed tribute to the Bregman stare involving everyone in the department, from constable deputies, to the K9 unit, to the motorcycle deputies, to the clerical staff. On Thursday, a day after the signature celebration was adopted by the entire Houston Astros dugout, the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office made sure to make themselves feel like they were staring at the world with the hometown boys. Abreu responded accordingly with a scoreless inning, fanning a pair of Mariners, yet Seattle again widened the deficit in the seventh with an Eugenio Suarez solo blast. In response to Verlander's last inning on the mound, Yuli Gurriel launched a home run, marking his second extra-base hit of the afternoon.

Mancini made his debut with the Astros on Tuesday, pinch-hitting in the ninth inning and grounding out in an eventual 2-1 loss. He made his first start Wednesday, clobbering a two-run bomb to left in the second inning to give Houston a 4-0 lead. When it comes to Altuve postseason home runs, this one stands apart in a category of its own. The Astros led the Yankees after each of the first eight innings in Game 6 of the 2019 ALCS, but New York was able to plate two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game up. Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman—who was coming off his sixth of seven All-Star seasons, and who hadn't allowed a run in his previous eight playoff appearances—walked Springer with two outs, bringing Altuve to the plate. Game 2 of the 2017 World Series wasn't short on power, with each team connecting on four long balls, and five home runs coming in extra innings alone.

Bagwell is followed within this ranking by Lance Berkman with a total of 326 home runs recorded throughout his career. The visit from his football team lifted Garcia's spirits, his mom told CBS News. In the midst of the ALCS, Houston Astros star Carlos Correa made time to visit a teen battling cancer in the hospital and made a promise that filled him with hope.

He hit a two-run blast to tie the game up, helping Houston go on to win 5-4. Jose Altuve #27 of the Houston Astros celebrates in the dugout after hitting a three-run home run in the 9th inning against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field on October 12, 2021 in Chicago. Houston won Game 4 of the 2020 ALDS by a comfortable margin, beating Oakland 11-6 to clinch the series. Altuve's two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh capped an 11-run explosion for the Astros between the fourth and seventh innings. Game 3 of the 2020 ALDS featured another first-inning solo blast from Altuve that didn't result in an Astros win, as the Oakland Athletics rallied late to pull out a 9-7 victory. Even when the Houston Astros were a historically bad baseball team early in his career, Jose Altuve served as a rare bright spot for a franchise that had nothing but the future to look forward to.

The final spot went to Corey Seager of the Texas Rangers, who will make just his second derby appearance since 2016, when he won National League rookie of the year as a Dodger. Zach grew up in Florida, lives in Florida, and will never leave Florida ... We'll even have a wrapping station for any items purchased at the Team Store. Suarez's home run came off Cristian Javier — Houston's strongest long-relief option — who only pitched only 1.1 innings out the bullpen. Bryan Abreu followed Verlander for his second-ever postseason appearance — the first coming against the New York Yankees in the 2019 American League Championship Series, where he allowed two runs in 0.2 innings of work. But J.P. Crawford knocked the Cy Young winner off his horse with a solo home run in the inning to build Seattle's run total to five. Rodríguez followed with his second extra-base hit of the afternoon with a two-out triple. But the Astros should not ever have been to that point in the first place.

Altuve and Carlos Correa opened the top of the 10th with back-to-back solo shots, but the Dodgers answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. A two-run home run by George Springer in the top of the 11th was the deciding factor in a 7-6 Houston victory. But it is one giant sea of green until you get to that section, which now has a seat wrapped in orange vinyl and sticks out to document the homer. Alvarez is also the first Astro to have his home run soar to that area of the park. The first player to ever launch home run into third deck was Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Jeromy Burnitz in 2000. Kyle Tucker's seventh-inning dropped fly in center for an error led to a sacrifice fly by Wilmer Flores moments later followed by Brandon Crawford's RBI single for San Francisco. Buster Posey hit a tying double in the third for the Giants, who couldn't do enough to back All-Star Kevin Gausman (9-5) as he dropped to 0-2 over three starts since July 11. Just last week, insider Ken Rosenthal reported that the Dodgers, normally in the hot stove mix, were shying away from pursuing Correa in free agency because they knew the team’s fanbase would be upset if LA brought in the face of the Astros’ scandal.

But after having a double-play overturned on review, followed by an error by Devers that allowed Alvarez to reach on a fielder’s choice, Houston loaded the bases. Talented, battle-tested, fearless, resilient and ridiculously good at baseball, the Astros dynasty rolls on, whether you like it or not. Furthermore, the Game 3 classic in particular highlighted those who might emerge as the main characters in the next chapter of Mariners vs. Astros.

Perhaps it will be Peña eyeing a massive nine-figure deal at some point later in the 2020s. Correa's 140 OPS+ led all shortstops last season, and since 2021, just three players have generated more Wins Above Replacement, per Baseball Reference. Correa is a premier two-way player still in his prime. It's no mystery as to why he was so coveted by San Francisco. Perhaps the sheer length of Correa's deal is surprising, though it was assumed he would earn the largest non-Judge contract during this free-agency cycle. Correa entered the offseason as the the youngest of the four marquee free-agent shortstops available—of which only Dansby Swanson remains–and his advanced stats are among the league's best.

Add in Correa's 2022 Minnesota salary and his new deal with the Giants, and his total free-agency haul since leaving Houston is a whopping $385 million over 14 years. "And the fan base, I mean, it's just so much fun," Harper said. Alvarez’s home run was heard around the baseball world on Tuesday night, and for good reason — he absolutely crushed it. Varsho was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2nd round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He would eventually make his debut with the team in 2020, playing 37 games for the "D-Backs" during the shortened season, before being featured in a more prominent role in 2021.

Two batters later, Brandon Marsh joined the party, launching a solo shot of his own. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. Quotes displayed in real-time or delayed by at least 15 minutes.

Thomson's decision would not play out the way he had envisioned, as Yordan Alvarez crushed a 450-foot, three-run homer to dead center field, giving the Astros a 3-1 lead, nine outs away from their second World Series title in franchise history. Yordan Alvarezand the Astros will forever remember his massive home run. The seat in the third deck of Minute Maid Park that the ball hit was painted orange to commemorate the occasion. When Alvarez hit the shot on Monday against the Oakland Athletics, he became only the second player in the park's 19-year history to do so.

His first game as a spectator at Fenway was in the 2018 playoffs Boston beat Houston in the ALCS. Tuesday was his first game actually playing in a game at the park. Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker, Jeremy Peña, Michael Brantley and Yuli Gurriel all went deep for the Astros, who set a franchise mark for homers in an inning. That made the insurance run the Astros manufactured in the top of the eighth feel huge, and indeed it was. In the bottom of the inning, Rafael Montero walked a pair and allowed a run-scoring single, exiting with two Phillies aboard with one out. Houston manager Dusty Baker summoned Ryan Pressly to attempt his first five-out save of the season, and the closer struck out Marsh and retired Schwarber on a scorched grounder to first that Trey Mancini played perfectly.

Houston Astros center fielder Mauricio Dubon catches Oakland Athletics first baseman Dermis Garcia’s fly out to end the game during the ninth inning of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Friday, Sept. 16, 2022 in Houston. On the first pitch of the game, Jose Altuve tacked a baseball that had an expected batting average of .560 that newfound defensive wizard Nick Castellanos caught in right field for the first out of the game. The catch was nearly identical to his previous two game-saving catches in the playoffs. Kyle Tucker hit two home runs in his first two at-bats for the Houston Astros on Friday night, pushing the Astros to a 5-0 lead through three innings of Game 1 and whipping the Minute Maid Park crowd into a frenzy.

Suarez was shaky at times, but ultimately gave the Phillies exactly what they needed – and the five homers of support certainly helped. The lefty allowed just three hits and walk while striking out four. With the Astros' American League MVP candidate due up, Phillies manager Rob Thomson opted to go to his bullpen, calling upon Jose Alvarado for a lefty-lefty matchup. Wheeler's day was done, having not allowed a run on a total of three hits and one walk, and throwing just 70 pitches. Wheeler opened the bottom of the sixth inning by hitting Martin Maldonado with a pitch. On the next play, the Astros traded base runners as Jose Altuve grounded into a fielder's choice, as Maldonado was thrown out at second base.

Thomson will also have a well-rested Seranthony Domínguez and José Alvarado at his disposal, looking to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. His teammates weren't able to get anything going for him either. Connor Brogdon, Kyle Gibson, Nick Nelson, and Andrew Bellatti picked up where Suárez left off, and held the Astros scoreless for the remainder of the game. "Castellanos' catch first pitch of the game kind of set the tone for our defense," Thomson said.

For the Mariners, the end of the road is painful but promising. After two decades of waiting for a postseason game at home, it's safe to say going scoreless for 18 innings wasn't exactly how the fans would've drawn it up. But GM Jerry Dipoto can now enter the winter with legitimate ambitions of building a World Series contender around the tremendous foundation already in place. After years of dealing with Carlos Correa, the Mariners might've thought there would be something of a transition period before the Astros inserted another tremendously talented player at the shortstop position. Instead, Peña slid into the starting job brilliantly, and his iconic, 18th-inning blast might just be the beginning of his full-blown star turn this October.

The Giants were tied to Bellinger in free agency, but he ultimately landed in Chicago with the Cubs. They did sign another 2017 Dodger Tuesday, though, inking a two-year deal with pitcher Ross Stripling, who joins fellow 2017 runners-up Alex Wood and Joc Pederson in San Francisco. Correa, 28, agreed to a 13-year, $350 million deal with San Francisco, as first reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan. Tuesday's deal is the third-largest contract in MLB history, trailing only Mike Trout's 12-year, $426.5 million extension signed in 2019 with the Los Angeles Angels, and Aaron Judge's new $360 million contract with the New York Yankees.

But in a 3-2 victory over the Phillies in Game 5 on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park, they won with mystery. They didn’t need another no-hitter to put themselves on the precipice of their second crown in six seasons, just deft maneuvers and sneaky vanishing acts every time the home club threatened to seize the momentum. Bregman is the last Astro to hit 40 home runs in a season. Seventeen games remain for him to reach the milestone. However clumsily the reasoning was conveyed, Wednesday’s off day did work wonders. He crushed a flat changeup from Martinez for another home run on Friday, giving him two in three innings.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports on Monday that the Houston Astros are engaged in trade talks with the Arizona Diamondbacks on slugger Daulton Varsho. Nightengale adds, however, that the asking price for the 26-year-old Varsho remains steep. Jose Abreu might not be the only big bat that the defending champions bring in this offseason. Harper gave credit to the intensity of the Philadelphia fans who were ready to cheer on their team to a commanding victory in the World Series.

Starter Ranger Suárez, despite pitching in his first-ever World Series game and making just his second start of the postseason, remained calm and collected on the mound. Based on his aplomb on the mound, one would think he was pitching a game in May. In 151 games with the Diamondbacks last season, Varsho hit 27 home runs, 74 RBIs, and had 16 stolen bases. The breakout campaign nearly doubled his previous career highs in every statistical category.

Carlos Correa signing is exactly what the Giants needed

It was a remarkable display of confidence and comfort from both of them, and there will be no doubt about their ability to handle pressure-packed situations in the future. Plus, with Houston joining the AL West as recently as 2013, there had been essentially zero high-stakes history between these two teams to fuel the fire of any sort of rivalry. Now, the Astros, who overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits in this Series, head home with Framber Valdez on the hill for Game 6 on Saturday night, their first lead in hand and, they hope, more magic to come. After Bryce Harper was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base, it was one more escape, with Castellanos grounding out to short. The escape act continued in the sixth, when Astros reliever Bryan Abreu replaced Hector Néris with one on and two out, only to plunk Brandon Marsh with the first pitch he threw.

The 26-year-old Varsho is an intriguing player because of his defensive versatility, as he can split time between the outfield and catcher. However, for teams pursuing the catcher/outfielder, the Diamondbacks have reportedly set a high asking price as he is entering his prime and is under team control until 2026. After Christian Vazquez inked a new deal with the Minnesota Twins, the Houston Astros have been heavily linked to Daulton Varsho of the Arizona Diamondbacks. While the Diamondbacks are in the middle of a rebuild, they are loaded with left-handed hitting outfielders and are reportedly looking to move one or two to address other holes in their roster.

The Mariners ended their 21-year postseason drought this season and also won their first playoff series since 2001. Though the record books will show that the Astros swept their division foe, the Mariners were right there in every game, and very easily could have won the series. The Astros will play the winner of the other American League Division Series, between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians. Entering play Saturday, the series was tied 1-1, with game four scheduled for Sunday. The Angels couldn’t even argue that point after watching the Astros set a season high by clubbing five home runs to overcome an injury-abbreviated start from José Urquidy and take the series finale, 9-1, on Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park. Devers put Boston in front 1-0 when he jumped on Urquidy’s 95 mph fastball and drove it over the center field wall for his seventh homer of the season. Eovaldi (1-2) became the third pitcher in major league history to surrender five homers in an inning, joining Chase Anderson (Sept. 17, 2020 vs Yankees) and Michael Blazek (July 28, 2017 vs. Nationals). José Urquidy (3-1) allowed 12 hits and four runs, including homers to Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez, but lasted five innings to record the victory.

Thanks to Kyle Tucker’s home runs, the Houston Astros got off to a fast start against the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night. Gurriel ended Eovaldi’s night when he hit the fifth and final homer of the inning to center. Tucker then connected on an Eovaldi fastball and drilled his sixth homer of the season over the right field fence. It was a particularly special night for Peña, a rookie who grew up in Rhode Island and played at Maine.

He allowed three hits, a walk, and struck out four batters, and that was all the Phillies needed. Tucker added his second homer of the night and seventh of the season in the fourth inning – a grand slam off Tyler Danish — as Houston won for the 13th time in 15 games. Each of Alvarez’s three home runs traveled at least 431 feet. According to ESPN Stats and Info, he is the first player to hit three home runs of at least 430 feet since Nelson Cruz on July 25, 2019.

Stripling in 2020 said that he had thought about whether he’d intentionally hit Astros’ batters if he had the chance. But upon George Springer’s 2021 arrival in Toronto as a Blue Jays teammate, Stripling confronted the ex-Astros outfielder about the scandal and hashed things out. He may need to repeat that conversation once he and Correa both arrive in San Francisco.

The only misstep is a rather silly sub-plot in which Garfield tries to hide his work from his family, which feels rather irrelevant (if he's putting food on the table, what does it matter?). The other problem is the trite Hollywood ending; for a film that's exemplified gritty realism throughout, to cop out in this way is a real joke. Over the course of the next few weeks, Dennis continues to impress Carver with his skills and proves to be intelligent enough to trust with some of his trade secrets. Before long, he takes Dennis under his wing as a full-time protégé. Though grateful for the increasingly lucrative opportunities, Dennis begins to question Carver’s business ethics. He goes along by reasoning that Carver is simply exploiting loopholes, so, as the profits mount, greed gets in the way of any moral reservations he has.

Not bringing in enough money to make ends meet, the bank has been threatening foreclosure for months, and Dennis is unable to find any help legally or financially to stave off eviction. After Dennis loses his case in court, a real-estate broker, Rick Carver, shows up with sheriff’s deputies in tow to make sure Dennis and his family are out of the house on eviction day. Only given a few minutes to pack what they need, they quickly find themselves locked out of their home with nowhere to go.

Homes review – chillingly topical eviction drama

When the only reward for hard-work is poverty (as is the case for an astronomic amount of blue-collar Americans), corruption and scam seem like primal survival skills. Such an economy, it’s worth pointing out, is not kept by the people who make, but rather moved by those who know what, when, where and from whom to take. He was great as General Zod in Man of Steel and he is excellent in this movie as an opportunistic foreclosure specialist in the REO industry. On the other hand, Andrew Garfield's performance was shaky at best, because it seemed like he was trying to hard. Laura Dern plays a lesser character in the movie, but should have been given a greater role and more depth to her character. As troubling as it sounds, some of the best scenes of the film are when people are evicted from their homes.

The movie is trying to inject some nobility into Dennis artificially and push a moral structure into the movie's framework. It would be simpler to see Dennis slowly accept his immorality. The final immorality against Frank Greene would be more compelling and more natural.

Some of the action and the plot is very contrived -- there's no reason for this big time con man to bring in a protégé and give him so much access and place so much trust in him. At one point, he's given a crucial assignment, to deliver a forged document, that Shannon obviously could have just as easily done himself. You can always identify dodgy writing when the story has to be manipulated in order to put the characters in dramatic situations. Another problem in the film is that while Shannon's bad guy is quite nuanced, Laura Dern is forced to play the same wise grandmother role she plays in lots of Disney movies. After being kicked out of her home, you'd think she might not be quite so high and mighty about the chance to get ahead in life. The writers of the film can see more than one shade of evil, but only one shade of good.

He offers Dennis work as a repairman at his properties and Dennis accepts. Dennis soon becomes Rick's assistant, helping to carry out evictions himself and quickly learning the real estate schemes that exploit government and banking rules to the disadvantage of struggling homeowners. Dennis takes a cut for the work he is performing for Rick and dips into the glamorous lifestyle in which Rick indulges. On his rounds he encounters the father of his son's best friend, but the man turned hostile toward Dennis when he saw him become part of Rick's eviction business. He says the eviction is illegal and will fight it in court. Charismatic and ruthless businessman Rick Carver , is making a killing by repossessing homes - gaming the real estate market, Wall Street banks and the US government.

Both known primarily for the comic book roles respectively, but they have both down some tremendous indie work as well. The film does a good job of using both of their strengths and playing off each other to create a very intelligent screenplay. Shannon is perfect for this role, but in some ways he's also not.

A powerful personality is thus that which mirrors its accomplishments. The rise of the broker in the 1980’s saw the slow decline of the kingpin. This was the ultimate gangster, the legit $treet-god, the tidied thief clothed as an immaculate impresario.

By making both Carver and Nash profoundly human — with all the flaws that condition entails — Bahrani forces his audience to realize the degrading agony that has resulted from the real estate meltdown. She’s wary of returning to the house they were evicted from, and reacts in horror when she realizes the means Nash used to purchase a luxurious new replacement for it. Nash, who wants to make enough money to get his own dwelling back, works without compunction.

With 99 Homes, Bahrani switches gears, focusing more on the narrative and development of the story, rather than his deep, often slow, evolution of memorable characters. The blood is from a homeowner who’d rather kill himself than be kicked out of his home by realtor Rick Carver . More of a preying vulture than empathetic human being, Carver shows no sympathy for the man who took his life instead of giving up his family home –an attitude we believe he has for everyone.

Movie Review: 99 Homes The New York Times

In a desperate move to secure a huge contract, Carver forges papers for foreclosure proceedings against a family Dennis knows personally. Features a gut wrenching eviction scene that establishes the tone for the rest of the film. It's the stuff they don't show you on reality flip shows, the personal, tragic side of foreclosure. Andrew Garfield, as a man who has "failed" in his duty as protector and provider, has an almost constant sense of panic throughout, catching his breath in his throat, his posture tight and alert.

Bahrani does well setting up the characters and story but personally I found myself getting less invested by the end. Recently unemployed single father Dennis Nash, a former construction worker in Orlando, Florida, is evicted together with his mother Lynn, a hairdresser, and young son Connor from the foreclosed home they share. Real estate operator Rick Carver is in charge of the eviction, and police officers who provide the enforcement call him "boss". Dennis and his family move into a shabby, cramped motel room. Dennis goes to Rick's office and tries to take back his tools stolen by Rick's men. Rick sees the confrontation and is impressed by Dennis' gumption.

"99 Homes" not only shows what goes on in everyday life, but the brutality of it. I loved every single second of this film and it will definitely have me watching it multiple times. As I said before, this might be my favourite picture of 2015. Brilliantly written, extremely well-acted, and incredibly raw and true, this film is a work of brilliance in the art of film. I think most of America was impacted in at least some capacity by the 2008 economic crisis/crash. Obviously, the housing market was hit the hardest and really at the forefront of the situation.

He's great at playing antagonistic characters but in this case its almost impossible to have any sympathy for his character. The film never bored me, in fact I was engaged throughout the story, but I think at times it just became too unrealistic. Dennis Nash lives in Orlando, Florida with his mother Lynn and son Connor. He's a single dad struggling to get by with his construction job when the housing crash takes the last bit away from him.

Both Laura Dern and Clancy Brown are good in their small roles as well. With that said, the real star is once again Shannon who is remarkably cold as the snake Realtor who determines that his money is worth more than anyone's feelings. For most of the running time, 99 HOMES is an exemplary thriller. The film follows the fortunes of a real estate broker who makes a living from evicting people from their homes.

Garfield is fine although his character's obsession with his childhood home gets into the way. It also doesn't make sense that he couldn't simply move to another motel. Heck, he could move his family temporarily into one of their foreclosed properties for two weeks.

The music chosen for each scene complimented the dramatic tone of what was happening. That seems to be a trend in Hollywood--the bad guy vaping. Say what you want about America but money is a very big part of our society. It's a free-for-all pursuit of money and it so helps with having a good family background. He delivers yet another great performance here as a man struggling to provide for his family. Laura Dern is also great as Garfield's mother in the film. That water stain would have leached right through that "mud" and 99 to 1 that paint isn't going to match, even if it's the same color as the age old paint on the ceiling.

The film is well-directed, but the script is too manufactured. However like Wall Street, the film is a morality play, Carver says in the course of the film along the lines that he tried to play by the book but it did not work out, you have to cheat the system. Dennis goes along with it but you know that he will soon realise that he has gone too far. Highly secretive and mostly broken individuals, the challenges and obstacles many of his protagonists face are mapped out and executed in unique, but usually tragic ways. You can't help to be emotional about 99 Homes, it's a movie about a period in history but it's so recent, you either are or know someone who has a story similar. Attacking such current events add to the drama and the tension of the movie.

Tight as a drum writing and terrific performances from Garfield, Shannon, plus Laura Dern as Dennis's mother, represent a solid investment of your time. 99 HOMES features award-worthy performances, an original premise that speaks so much truth, but contains a climax that is hard to like, leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth. Bahrani's vérité gets somewhat lost among his amplified quasi-thrillery plot beats, but this low-key master continues to grow with a wider scope and commanding actors.

Dennis goes to argue over stolen tools during the eviction and Rick recruits him into his company. Rick runs scams to steal from the vacant homes to get reimbursed by the government or the banks. Dennis' morality is muddled as he desperately tries to get his home back. I'm a huge fan of filmmaker Ramin Bahrani, and I found his latest offering a searing and powerful film. Dennis checks his family into a seedy downtown hotel crowded with other evicted families who have been living there for months, and even years.

Nearly an entire year where the tenant didn't pay a penny in rent. Laura Dern is also in the movie and does a fantastic job as Garfield's mother. She is the emotional weight that the film needed and brings his character back to the real world when it got too exaggerated. The film will definitely pull on your heart strings at times, especially when you see all sorts of people being ripped from their homes. I just think the structure of the story was unbalanced at times with arcs being a bit too unrealistic. "99 Homes" has an intense beginning that absorbs me into the story.

Garfield may be know for his role as afflicted teen Peter Parker or Spider-Man by many, while audiences may know Shannon best for his villainous turn as General Zod in the recent Superman reboot Man of Steel. The best part about watching 99 Homes is analyzing these men, and seeing them transform before our eyes into the demons that haunt the streets and doorsteps of everyday people. Sheltered in our own little seats and watching the unfortunate tragedy unfold on-screen, this compassionate slice of other people's reality is one of the most engaging features of 2014. Founded on concrete performances, sturdy direction and a narrative with a good roof on its head, 99 Homes is built to last. It's a film worth seeing just for the story, but with the superb performances, it makes a film you need to see.

Films like these tend to not interest me but seeing Michael Shannon and Andrew Garfield together got me excited. 99 Homes is a devastating look at the housing market crash that took place in 2008 and shows the corruption and greed that takes place within this business. Scenes where we see people being evicted out of their homes are painful to watch. Bahrani executes these scenes by not overly dramatising them but rather giving us a gritty and unfiltered look at these situations which I found really effective. The opening alone is fantastic as we get a long take eviction sequence that sets the tone of the film well.

Casting

It's an electrifying premise and one that's superbly directed by Ramin Bahrani who brings a documentary-style realism to his work. Certainly the camera-work is fantastic, often hand held and getting into the faces of the actors so that you feel close up and involved with the situations. However, the real ace up the sleeve is the casting of Michael Shannon as the criminal broker; he gives a performance of reptilian magnitude as an amoral money-hunter and he's simply magnificent. I loved this guy in BOARDWALK EMPIRE and he continues to go from strength to strength here. Everyone should see "99 Homes," if not for the amazing filmmaking then to better learn how banks caused the housing market crash that devastated so many Americans, and the greed and profiteering that followed. It’s a heart-breaking, authentic insight into the devastation caused by the 2008 housing market crash.

NEW YORK – Trenchant, didactic and unflinching, “99 Homes” also is an example of profoundly moral filmmaking. Instead, the action feels reactionary and the emotional core boils down to “Can you believe they’re doing this? ” rather than something more profound in exploring homelessness.

While everything here is very much fictional the director certainly gets his message across with some very realistic drama. It also doesn't hurt that you get two very good performances including one that ranks among the best of the year. Michael Shannon is great as he portrays Rick Carver as the present-day Gordon Gekko.

Where to watch

The last forty minutes of the film are not satisfying at all, and just gets dumb with characters acting more and more ridiculously. In the beginning of the movie, many of the characters act over the top for the sake of dramatic tension, but it it gets to be too much towards the end. This film tells the story of a hard working builder who gets unemployed, and hence cannot keep up with the mortgage payments and is subsequently evicted.

Having witnessed the malicious calls Rick often gets, he decides to move out of the motel room immediately by selling the family home and buying a much more luxurious home instead. Despite unethical and immoral decisions by the characters, everything takes place within a moral worldview. There are also gratuitous references to sexual acts, slurs, drunkenness, and violence. Acclaimed indie filmmaker Ramin Bahrani, who regularly and bravely focuses on heartbreaking trials of life while keeping his stories rooted in humanity, turns in some of his finest work here.

After moving Lynn and Connor into a motel, Nash is forced to do some quick thinking. So when a confrontation over stolen tools leads to an offer to work for Carver, Nash grabs at it — even if his first task turns out to be shoveling backed-up sewage out of a foreclosed house.

But, will he able to live with himself now that he's doing to others what was so callously done to him? While there is an immediacy and current relevancy to the story being told here, at its heart is a rather strong moral argument against what the "American Dream" has become . I was reminded of Oppenheimer's famous quote about the atomic bomb, except with a few words changed.

One day, business gets too personal when Dennis knows the family he must force out of their home.
